Invitation to Apply for Arts Cultural Diversity Committee

Consider participating in the creation of a new and much needed resource. The Guidebook of Diverse Artists and Artworks will highlight 10 examples that are representative of the student population in Massachusetts. Professional Learning Opportunities in Arts Education

1) Take the Online Course: Overview of the 2019 MA Arts Curriculum Framework
This two-hour online course provides a basic overview of the major shifts in the 2019 Massachusetts Arts Curriculum Framework. It consists of four self-paced, unlocking topic sections with embedded assessments at the conclusion of each to check for understanding. To learn more about the course contents, please view this short video overview. Participants can self-enroll in the course here.
2) Register for DESE’s Professional Development Series on the Arts Curriculum Framework
Earn 10 PDPs for participating in this professional learning series led by DESE’s Arts Education Ambassadors in every region of the state. The series is comprised of the two-hour online course as a pre-requisite, followed by 8 hours total of in-person sessions that examine the major components of the new Arts Framework as they apply to practice. Participants engage collaboratively with authentic hands-on tasks that unpack the artistic practices and content standards. MAEA Recognitions Exhibit – Deadline Extended Dec 13

Deadline extended to December 13.

MAEA is sponsoring a juried art exhibit for high school students, grades 9 – 12, open to MAEA members only. Entries reflect original artwork from students in public and private schools. The exhibition will coincide with the Youth Art Month exhibit at the Massachusetts Transportation Building with an awards ceremony on March 1, 2020. THE APPLICATION PORTAL IS NOW LIVE FOR ART ALL-STATE 2020: TAPE ART EDITION!

The Massachusetts Art Education Association is proud to announce that Art All-State Massachusetts will celebrate its 33rd year in 2020 with a special Tape Art Edition! Each school or program may nominate two high school juniors.

Important Dates
January 1st: Intent to Nominate Form Due
January 31st: Application Materials Due
May 16th, 22nd and 30th: Art All-State at the Worcester Art Museum in Worcester, MA (accepted students will attend for one full day)

Funding for the 2020 NAEA Convention in Minnesota

If you are planning to attend the National Art Education Association Convention this March in Minneapolis Minnesota, you may be interested in a few opportunities to help fund this professional development.

First Time Attendee Scholarship – Cover Convention Registration fee; Up to three nights hotel accommodations at the NAEA designated hotel; Travel stipend of up to $300 for transportation and food. Deadline December 17.

Art Educator Scholarship – Covers Convention Registration Fee – Deadline December 17.

Additionally, besides the scholarships from NAEA, some of the NAEA Interest Groups offer travel awards with various requirements and deadlines. The Caucus of Social Theory in Art Education offers a travel award if you are presenting. The deadline January 15. The Community Arts Caucus also offers a travel award of $300. The deadline is January 10.

We are always looking to welcome MAEA members to the Board of Directors and Committees. All board meetings and committee meetings have the option to meet virtually, so we welcome members from across the state!

We have the following positions open for a partial or full term:

  • Secondary Division Director – Now – December 31, 2020
  • Museum Education Division Director – Now – December 31, 2020
  • Early Childhood Representative – Now – December 31, 2021
  • Retired Representative – January 1 2020 – December 31, 2021
  • Awards Committee Chair – Now – December 31, 2020

Interested in becoming more involved, but aren’t ready to take the plunge into an official board position? Consider joining one of our active committees like awards, youth art month, public relations, student recognitions, or exhibitions.

Arlene Black Mollo – Obituary

It is with a heavy heart we share that Arlene Black Mollo, of Falmouth formerly of Norwood and Wellesley has passed away. Arlene was a visual artist, educator, and professional watercolorist. She was a former art education professor at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and MAEA/NAEA member.
 
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Timothy Church, 650 Nichols Street, Norwood on Wednesday November 27 at 10:30 am. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery, Norwood. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Arlene may be made to the Emmanuel Fund at Emmanuel College 400 The Fenway Boston, MA 02115.

Youth Art Month: Flag Contest

Celebrate Youth Art Month – Have your students enter the Youth Art Month Flag Contest sponsored by Sargent Art. This contest is open to students in grades K-12. Each teacher may submit up to 10 entries.

This year’s theme is TAKE A JOURNEY THROUGH ART.

One Grand Prize winner will receive: $250 to student PLUS $500 in Sargent Art supplies for your classroom.

One Elementary, Middle, and High School winner will receive: $100 worth of Sargent Art supplies to student PLUS $300 in Sargent Art supplies for your classroom.

Youth Art Month: Statewide Exhibit Registration Now Open

March is Youth Art Month. There are many ways to participate in Youth Art Month 2020.

One way to join in on the Youth Art Month fun is by participating in the Statewide Youth Art Month exhibit! Join teachers from across the state as they celebrate the amazing work of their students. The exhibit will be displayed in Boston at the State Transportation Building.

All participating teachers for the Statewide Youth Art Month exhibit must register. Registration for the Statewide Youth Art Month Exhibit is free for MAEA members | Non-members pay $15.  Registration closes January 10, 2020.
