We are currently accepting articles for the Spring/Summer edition of the MAEA News. We want to hear from you!
Articles could include more about a successful lesson you’ve recently taught; a program you are putting together for your community; or how you are engaging visitors to an exhibit. Email editor@massarted.com to submit article or to discuss article ideas.
You can find all the details for submitting an article here. Please remember to include a signed Artwork Release form and a Photo Release form, as needed.

Art Educators of Massachusetts Exhibit

MAEA is continuing our series of art education exhibitions in the second floor atrium gallery space at the State Transportation Building in Boston, and we’d love to have you participate!
Active and retired art educators working in Massachusetts are invited to submit their 2D and 3D artwork for the annual juried exhibit Art Educators of Massachusetts . The jury for the exhibit will be art teaching peers who are members of the Massachusetts Art Education Association Board.

Submitting your art for this exhibit is easy!
  1. Go to 2019arteducatorsofmassachusetts.artcall.org
  2. Click the REGISTER button in the top right corner of the page to create an ArtCall profile or log in if you already have a profile.
  3. Click the NEW SUBMISSION button.
  4. Enter your submission details and promo code if you are an MAEA member. Don’t have the promo code? Check your email for the most recent newsblast or send an email to exhibitions@massarted.com.
  5. Upload up to four pieces of artwork.
  6. Receive a confirmation e-mail once you have completed the submission process.

Arts Framework Review

Thank you to everyone who submitted feedback for the revised Arts Framework. Dawn Benski, who was recently hired by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in the role of Arts Content Lead, has been working to review every comment from the survey, which included feedback from over 300 participants!

The Arts Framework are set to be approved by the The Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education at the June 25 board meeting.

In the meantime, if you missed the Arts Framework Roadshow, you can learn more about the structure of the Arts Framework by viewing the presentation and Q&A session recorded at Wilmington High on April 10, 2019.

#WickedSmARTShows – May Art Show Feature

We want to share your art shows! During the month of May, MAEA will be featuring art shows of all kinds from across the state. Want your art show to be featured? Use the hashtag #WickedSmARTShows and tag MAEA in your art show social media posts.

Art shows can:

  • Include a whole program or a subsection of the program
  • Be organized/selected by the teacher or the students
  • Happen before or in May

Be sure to mention in your post who you are, where you teach, what grades you teach, and anything else that makes your art show special!

Active and retired art educators working in Massachusetts are invited to submit their 2D and 3D artwork for the annual juried exhibit “Art Educators of Massachusetts.” Look for the submission portal to open soon.

Fall Course/PDP Offering – Tufts University

Kay Furst, Tuesdays 5:30–8:30 p.m. School of the Museum of Fine Arts
This is a graduate level course that provides an overview of visual art methods and materials that are appropriate for art students in grades PK-8. The focus of this course is to provide you with hands-on opportunities to explore and become familiar with a wide range of materials and to evaluate the properties of these materials to expand upon new lesson possibilities. This course will also require a re-look at the artistic, emotional, cognitive and social development of young students in the PK-8 age group through readings and discussions. Learn more .

Week-Long Summer Professional Development for Art Educators

Montserrat College of Art invites you to come build your studio practice and earn 30 PDPs on their campus from June 23 – 28.
The Art Educator Summer Institute is a week-long residential summer program created for art educators teaching grades K through 12, and community college art educators.
Come immerse yourself in our state-of-the-art studio spaces to develop your practice and build new skills that you can bring back to your classroom.
Participants will engage in four days of art-making, consisting of daily morning and afternoon workshops led by our BFA faculty.
The program’s $450 cost includes participation in up to two workshops and double occupancy in residential housing (single room housing may be secured for an additional cost). Community meals covered by the program cost includes a welcome dinner, continental breakfasts, and a closing reception. Learn more and register here .

Now Accepting Workshop Proposals – New Perspectives in Art Education – 2019 MAEA Conference November 9-10
The MAEA Conference offers content-specific professional development opportunities for art educators, including hands-on workshops, best-practice lectures, gallery/museum tours, awards ceremony, exhibitions, and more! Conference activities will take place in the Beverly, MA area and will be hosted by Montserrat College of Art, featuring keynote speaker Ekua Holmes, and Super Session speaker Oliver Parker.
