Media Arts Roundtable Discussion

If you are a secondary educator, we hope you will join our Media Arts Roundtable Discussion on Thursday October 8 at 6:30 pm on Zoom. This roundtable discussion is meant for secondary art educators who teach computer arts or digital arts. Our intention is to bring these educators together in an informal manner to discuss the transition into the 2020 school year. We hope to share and discuss ideas, strategies, and pedagogy for the media arts in either a remote model or in-person model with the various COVID-19 health and safety protocols in place.


The co-facilitators of this session are Alyssa Taranto, MAEA Media Arts Representative and Visual Art Educator at Franklin High School and Angela Wong, Visual Art Educator at Natick High School.

WAEA Virtual Conference Partnership – Exhibit Opportunity

MAEA is happy to share that we are partnering with the Wisconsin Art Education Association to provide MAEA members with a fall virtual conference opportunity. 20/20 Vision will be hosted online on October 24, 2020 with a mix of both live events and pre-recorded sessions. All live sessions will also be recorded and added to the library of sessions and you will have access to those sessions until December 31, 2020 so you will be able to view sessions at your own pace.  Featured Massachusetts presenters include Sandy Coleman, Lauren Gould, Lydia Gruner, Chris Hall, Diane Jaquith, Kristi Oliver, and Margaurita Spear, and Emily & Robb Sandagata. Center for Instructional Support Program 2020-2021

The Arts Leaders Network will support PreK-12 arts leaders to come together to engage in discussions relevant to the arts and their role as leaders within their districts. This network will provide participants an opportunity to share resources and strategies for implementing the 2019 Arts Curriculum Framework, discuss arts instructional materials, and connect with leaders from across the Commonwealth. It will provide participants an opportunity to deepen understanding of the major shifts and standards of the Framework, as well as accompanying guidance and resources, including response to COVID-19.

Audience:  Arts content leaders/lead teachers, arts content coaches, and arts coordinators or arts content designees invited to attend by a district’s curriculum director or school principal.

Dates and Times: 11/5/20, 1/19/21, 3/10/21, 5/6/21

3:00 – 4:30 pm with optional working groups from 5:00 – 6:00 pm

Call for Art – 2021 MAEA Awards

The MAEA Awards Committee is currently accepting art submissions from artists for the 2021 MAEA awards. These will be awarded to our 2021 MAEA award winners this fall. The selected image will be printed on glass via Fracture for the awards ceremony. The deadline for submission has been extended through September 20, 2020. Learn more here.

Supervisors Roundtable Discussion

We hope you will join our Supervisors Roundtable Discussion this coming Tuesday, August 25 to discuss potential topics related to the reopening of schools, curriculum topics, remote/hybrid teaching models, itinerant staff, limited supplies, and/or guiding arts teachers through the 2019 Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for the Arts.

The co-facilitators of this session are Patty Klibansky, Art, Theater, Dance Curriculum Director of the Lynn Public Schools and Alice Gentili, Art Department Chair of the Mendon-Upton Regional School District and visual arts/media arts educator at Miscoe Hill Middle School.

Art Education Zoom Series – August Session

Focus for August: Connect, Create, Collab
The goal of this session is to provide a space for arts educators who would like to take part in creating artwork together virtually. Connect, Create, Collab, is an opportunity for artmaking and informal art sharing facilitated by the conference committee chair Shannon Carey. There will also be time during the session to connect with other arts educators as well as engage collaboratively in conversation about the upcoming school year. At the conclusion of the session there will be time to share the artwork you have created during this session, or previously during the time span of the pandemic.

Art Education Zoom Series

About this Series: The MAEA Board of Directors has determined that a virtual conference in the fall of 2020 will not be beneficial for our membership for a number of factors, including the financial implications of the global pandemic and the virtual meeting fatigue many of us felt this spring. In place of the yearly fall conference, the MAEA Conference Committee is planning monthly Zoom conversations and virtual events for members that we are rolling out this summer. We believe that smaller virtual gatherings each month over the next year will help to minimize fatigue and provide the support our members need at this time.

Focus for July: Looking Inward – The goal of this session is to provide a space for arts educators who would like to reflect on their individual practices in response to the current Black Lives Matter Movement and how implicit bias perpetuates racism. This session is a personal reflection session facilitated by MAEA Board of Directors Laura Evonne Steinman and Melissa Mastrolia. They will be holding space for participants with exercises designed to help us look deeper at our own individual practices and reflect on our biases.
