DESCRIPTION:

This seven-week book study will focus on practical application of trauma-informed care and therapeutic approaches to care through an in-depth study of Lisa Kay’s new book, Therapeutic Approaches in Art Education. Kay is Associate Professor and Chair of Art Education and Community Arts Practices at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University. According to Temple’s Art Therapy Program page, Kay’s writing displays an, “interest in narrative storytelling that encourages personal reflection, self-knowledge and healing in the context of making art.” We picked this particular text to help develop strategies to support   our students coming out of a tumultuous time of broken learning and fractured routines. Part of Kay’s approach also deals with self-care for educators like us through the practices discussed. Reading this book together may help both faculty and students in either a virtual or physical classroom setting. This book study will culminate in a virtual art making activity using some methods Kay recommends.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT POINTS:

Participants will earn 15 PDPs after successful completion of all of the book group sessions. This fulfills DESE’s requirement related to training in strategies for effective schooling for students with disabilities and the instruction of students with diverse learning styles.
