Statewide YAM & MAEA Recognitions Exhibit – Exhibit Update

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak the State Transportation Building in Boston, where MAEA manages the 2nd Floor Atrium Gallery space, is currently closed to the public. The Statewide Youth Art Month exhibit and the Massachusetts Amazing Emerging Artists Recognitions exhibit, which were scheduled to come down March 26 will continue to stay on display until we have a better idea of when we can get the show down and work returned back to teachers and students.

Celebrating the Drawing Act – Updated Exhibit Information

150 years ago, on May 16, 1870, Massachusetts passed An Act relating to free instruction in drawing , which has become known as the Drawing Act of 1870 . This was the first law in the nation requiring drawing to be taught in public schools and communities, passed by our own Massachusetts legislature!

Drawing at School: 1870-2020 – Exhibit Dates to be Determined

MAEA would like to celebrate the progress art education has made over those 150 years.

Please note we have had to make adjustments to this exhibit. It was previously planned to be installed during April vacation. We are hoping to run the exhibit during the summer, but with most schools not currently in session, the exact dates of this exhibit are to be determined. We will update the details for this exhibit as soon as we have more information.

When details are finalized for this exhibit we invite all teachers to submit up to 6 student drawings and 1 personal drawing for the show. All students are welcome from early childhood through college.

Drawing Act 150 – A Great Opportunity for Remote Learning

Help celebrate the 150th year of the Drawing Act by asking your students, their families, and your colleagues, friends and family to create a small drawing of something seen every day.

The Drawing Act Coalition* invites everyone to contribute original drawings to celebrate this anniversary.  Drawings could be a tree outside your window, your keys, a parking meter, or a family member’s face. One of the possible public displays includes a community art installation at the Massachusetts State House this May.  See the attached flyer for all the details!

Who can participate in Drawing Act 150?

Everyone! We welcome submissions from anyone across Massachusetts. Please note, The Drawing Act Coalition is requesting that submissions be sent in digitally (photograph of the work or digital drawing) instead of mailed in.

MAEA is happy to partner with the Massachusetts Cultural Council, MassCreative, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and the Massachusetts Legislature to bring you two exhibit opportunities to celebrate the 150 anniversary of the Drawing Act of 1870.

2020 MAEA Recognitions Exhibit

Congratulations to all the artists with work accepted into the MAEA Recognitions exhibit and to the award winners! Please join us for a Family Celebration on Sunday March 1 from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. The exhibit is on view at the State Transportation Building, 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA. Registration Open: MASSACHUSETTS AMAZING EMERGING ARTISTS EXHIBITION

REGISTRATION IS OPEN NOVEMBER 13 – DECEMBER 6, 2019!

MAEA is sponsoring a juried art exhibit for high school students, grades 9 – 12, open to MAEA members only. Entries reflect original artwork from students in public and private schools. The exhibition will coincide with the Youth Art Month exhibit at the Massachusetts Transportation Building with an awards ceremony on March 1, 2020. NAHS @ Montserrat College of Art – Reception This Saturday

Thank you to all the NAHS chapter sponsors who prepped work and have dropped it off or mailed it in for the NAHS exhibit Open Perspectives in conjunction with the MAEA conference New Perspectives in Art Education at Montserrat College of Art in Beverly.

If you plan to attend the exhibit reception on November 9 from 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm, please RSVP today. The exhibit and reception will be held in the 2nd Floor of the Hardie Building, 23 Essex Street, Beverly MA 01915.

MAEA Conference attendees do not have to register with the link above, but instead just select the NAHS exhibit reception as a session in the conference schedule.

This exhibit includes student artists from Andover High School, Beverly High School, Braintree High School, Falmouth High School, Fairhaven High School, Franklin High School, Groton-Dunstable Regional High School, Lowell Catholic High School, Manchester Essex Regional HS, Marblehead High School, Needham High School, Revere High School, Shepherd Hill Regional High School, Somerville High School.

Youth Art Month Statewide Exhibit

Make sure you are a part of our 2020 statewide Youth Art Month exhibit, where we will honor Massachusetts artists in grades k-12 and celebrate quality art education at the State Transportation Building in Boston.

2020 MAEA Recognitions Exhibit

Secondary art educators, we invite you to participate in the third year of this exciting opportunity for high school art students.

This juried exhibit is open to students in grades 9-12. Participants must be students of an MAEA member.

Each teacher may submit up to 5 pieces of student artwork, with a limit of one entry per student and a $5 fee per entry.

Digital submissions will open be open November 13 – December 6, 2019.
