Art Educators of Massachusetts – Exhibit Opportunity

The MAEA Board of Directors is happy to announce that there will be an Art Educators of Massachusetts exhibit in conjunction with the 2024 MAEA Awards Ceremony!

Active and retired art educators in Massachusetts are invited to submit their 2D artwork for the 2024 MAEA Art Educators exhibit at the Gallery at Villageworks.

The exhibit registration deadline is Sunday, March 10, 2024

The exhibit will be on view March 14 – April 16 and there will be an exhibit reception Thursday, April 11 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in conjunction with the 2024 MAEA Awards Ceremony.

MAEA Museum Meetup: The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art

Join us for a special MAEA Museum Meetup in Western Mass! Teachers will meet up at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, the international champion for picture books for a tour and artmaking. After some mingling over coffee and cider donuts, MAEA teachers will take a guided tour of The Carle’s special exhibition Alphabet Soup: How Picture Books Are Made, From A to Z.

The exhibition mines The Carle’s permanent collection to uncover the processes that bring picture books to life. Each letter of the alphabet introduces a key concept in picture-book making, from the materials artists use, to changes in printing technology, and even the physical parts of books themselves. The visit will end with time in The Carle’s Art Studio, making an alphabet using simple shapes and printmaking techniques (and inspired by art on view in the galleries).

Advance registration required and space is limited.

Art is Power Art as Activism Poster Contest for High School Students

Leading Ladies would like to invite your students to participate in the 2024 Art as Activism Poster Contest for high school students in northern Massachusetts, specifically in Middlesex and Essex Counties. This year’s theme is encouraging people to vote.

The contest is sponsored by Leading Ladies, a nonpartisan North Shore group dedicated to social justice and the importance of voting. We believe in art as activism and that art can be an especially effective way for students to find their voices.

Important details about this year’s contest:

All entries must be designed to encourage people to vote in the upcoming 2024 elections
Entries can be directed at a general audience, or a particular group (women, people with disabilities, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, Asian Americans, etc.)
Entries must be able to be posted electronically as well as printed
Entries will be judged by a panel of professional artists and art educators
The top three poster submissions will receive cash prizes
A group of the top entries and honorable mentions will be displayed this spring and summer at Beverly’s Arts Fest; The Mayor’s Gallery in Beverly City Hall; and other venues TBD
Submissions are due by April 14, 2024 and can be submitted here via google form
Winners will be announced on May 1, 2024

TAB Camp Northeast 2024

When: August 5 – 8, 2024
Where: Curtis Farm, Westminster MA (very close to Rt. 2)

Campfire, potlucks, art making, and large and small individual discussions will feed your TAB soul.

Sleeping Options: Bring a tent to set up on the property OR stay at a local hotel and join us during the day/night activities (same registration fee for property rental) (barn is available for only tenters to use for sleeping IF there is a huge rainstorm)
*RV/Campers are welcome! No “hookups”, but you could use your RV as your “sleeping place”.

ROUGH SCHEDULE:
Monday, August 5:
AFTERNOON/EVENING – arrival, set up of tents, set up of art studio and community dinner at local restaurant. (*bonfire, weather permitting)

Tuesday, August 6:
MORNING – Light breakfast & coffee provided by participants. Discuss what the day will look like and create UNConference agenda.
AFTERNOON: TAB Camp UNConference – Multiple sessions designed by attendees. Lunch and dinner will be food brought by attendees.
EVENING: The Night Studio. Communal art space for creating!
*If weather permits: bonfire! Discuss tomorrow’s activities

Wednesday, August 7 Options:
Day 2 of unconference style sessions; trip to local pond beach; hiking’ trip up Wachusett Mountain for picnic; all day studio/creating; or a trip to local art museum, Fitchburg Art Museum.

Thursday, August 8: breakfast; closing session; take down tents; and pack up.

Saturday, March 2 – In partnership with Primary Source, join the MFA to explore the histories, legacies, and artistic contributions of global Muslim communities in the age of empire, steam, and print using a range of objects in the Museum’s collection. Later Winter/Early Spring Professional Development

MAEA is happy to share we are offering a number of different professional development offerings coming up the rest of this school year. We are offering Sheltered English Instruction (SEI) for Arts Educators February 20 – 22 online from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. each day. More information and the link the register can be found here.

We are also offering monthly Hands-On Art Making sessions online. The February and March offerings have been scheduled already and will focus on stamp carving in February and working with t-shirt yarn in March. Each month the same session is scheduled for Thursday and Saturday to make it accessible for the most art educators. More information and the link to register can be found here.
