NEWS FROM GRADUATE PROGRAM AT MASSART
Relaunching one of our art education graduate degrees
The MSAE is a 30-credit program that prepares K-12 educators who hold an initial teaching license for professional licensure in Art Education. It serves two groups: (1) K-12 practitioners with initial licensure and a strong studio background who are preparing for professional licensure by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), and (2) cross-disciplinary professionals in museum, community, or other non-school settings who are interested in educational theory and practice in the visual arts. The program is taken over two years including two summers.
MassArt's Art Education Department is a leader in the field. The mission of the department is to grow reflective, resourceful, socially-committed artist-educators by developing students’ understanding of learning, studio, and teaching practices in dynamic, messy interactions that inform one another. Our curriculum reflects three core beliefs about the ongoing develop.m.ent of dynamic art teachers: (1) that teachers must commit to their own art-making practice; (2) that both art-making and teaching bear broad social responsibility; and (3) that social responsibility carries beyond the classroom and studio into the wider community.
The MSAE curriculum is a sequence of art education courses in theory, history, policy, and socio-cultural contexts of pedagogy, curriculum, research methods, aesthetics, and new media -- all to develop a common core of concepts, language, and understanding. Complementing the pedagogical courses are intensive studios in which students pursue refinement in expressing their ideas visually and verbally at a professional academic level. The program culminates in a final written thesis and defense and/or in production, exhibition, and defense of a mature body of artwork.
As the home to the first-in-the-nation department dedicated to the teaching of art, our innovative courses are at the forefront of contemporary art and design practice and based in contemporary studio practice and cutting-edge pedagogical theory that addresses issues of curriculum, research strategies, social justice, equity, and access.
